The organization serves to enhance the well-being of patients in the hospital environment by providing a unique offering to them in the form of professional ‘medical clowning’. It creates an opportunity to offer additional flexible employment to professional and aspiring performing artists enabling them to give back to their communities in the most incredibly meaningful and powerful way. Medical Clowning has the capacity to enhance lives in South Africa to both the giver and receiver.
Our country faces a lot of challenges, with an enormous amount of trauma, stress and anxiety in many places. The hospital environment is not immune to this, research has shown that the interaction with the Medical Clown has significant positive aspects, reduces stress and has increased serotonin levels in patients. The Medical Clown as the ability to put smiles on the faces of very sick people and help their families make sense of the trauma they are experiencing.
Currently, the organization is only available to offer services in the Gauteng region and target both state and private hospitals in this area. Following the initial medical training intervention planned in August 2018, we hoped to have fifteen clowns who would be able to share their skills in identified hospitals in this region.
With secured funding in place we envisage, one medical clown to complete three (3) two (2) hour sessions per week.
